Complete Wiki Index

The following is a complete set of links that appear on my wiki to date. A copy of this will be appearing on the wiki, and I expect to update it monthly. I hope this makes it easier to find things on the wiki.  To be honest, Blogger doesn't make it easy to lay this out.  This is the best I can do.

  1. Pretty impressive. Do you find it easier using blogspot for the wiki? It looks tremendously frustrating...but then, I’ve never tried building a wiki.

  2. comme ci comme ça. I found wikispaces very frustrating to comfortably write on. The formatting system was very notebook like, adding random spaces between paragraphs and refusing to accept headings.

Blogger, on the other hand, writes very easily. It doesn't format headings well, but it is easier to post pictures into and I think it looks cleaner and easier to read. Less junky fonts available. I so hate courier and I'm developing a real hate for georgia too.

Links were easier to create and to track in wikispaces. It's easy enough to make them in blogger, but there's no backlinks page; so you can't just check to see what other pages on the blog are linked to the page you're seeing. I miss that too.

Of late, I've started creating a mirror file in word. I can track the links better there and put in links to multiple posts in order, if I add a new page. My ship rules thus far are together on a 12K word document and what I've done for player characters of late is gathered on a document of about 15K words. This way, if I add a post about "death," I can quickly search the document for the word and put in hyperlinks. I color the new links red, so that at some point when I'm not doing anything important, but listening to a podcast or book, I can go through and update the blog wiki in very little time.

I've been experimenting with this for about two months now and it is working VERY well, much better than what wikispaces could offer me. And ultimately, when I have a file like this "finished," I can distribute the complete file for free to my readers, in word, complete with hyperlinks.

    1. Be careful of word, when the file size gets too big or you have too many links, it starts having some weird bugs. Dunno if it's fixed in the latest version, but I switched to Latex for my manuals.

      Very impressive work, BTW.

  3. Thank you. You're quite right about word; past 900 links the page showed signs of data management failure. Something like the above will need to be split into more than one file.

I've moved back to word 2007 lately, and it is working clean and wonderful. With pure text, it is fine up to 65,000 words. How to Run was 109,000 and while the visual presentation showed signs of wear, no data loss occurred though I was editing it for hours at a time. It is always best to split files that get above 60K words. The hyperlinks will probably make that a smaller number ... I promise to keep an eye on it.
