Disliking the traditional description of just another monster (JAM), I prefer to colour the dragon turtle as a sort of guru. This way, the monster becomes the quest, as the players seek it out in order to discover the answer to questions that few left alive can answer. The unpleasant journey then takes place to some dense river swamp at the edge of an ocean, most likely a place not easy to access. Options include the southern coastline of Burma, the Amazon delta, the east islands along the coast of China ... even the Mississippi delta, a largely uninhabited place in the 17th century. On the way, the party is warned to ask a "worthy" question. Will the monster accept the approach of the players or won't it? And if it doesn't, how nasty is that fight going to be?
It's good tension, and it easily sets up the next adventure as the immense turtle tells them the answer to the question ... with the possibilities that creates.
A lovely, nasty creature.
ReplyDeleteAny kind of breath weapon is no joke, especially per stunning rules when even a successful save leaves you winded.
I like creatures like this. Singular entities of a primordial age that suffer no fools. Very adventurous.
Very interesting, reminds me of an anime where humans only live on the backs of giant turtles.
ReplyDelete. . . I think it was avatar, the Korra sequel maybe?
