Preview of the Lantern, December 1635

A month late, or rather I've skipped a month, but I have the lantern available to be looked at for those few of you who contribute $10 or more to my patreon each month.  As ever, the Lantern will be available for $7 come the 21st of this month.

This image is of the back page, since I posted the front page a few days ago.

P.S.,

Upon request of a reader in the comments, I'm adding this post.

  1. Hi, I'm sorry, I know this is an off-topic comment, but the players in my Saturday Night DnD game ended the session in the private library of a powerful nobleman intending to do some research. I know you had some set of rules typed up somewhere on this blog on "books as treasure" and on the use of libraries/research/books as mechanics, but I cannot for the life of me find them now. Is there a tag or a keyword I can use to find them? I've already used everything obvious ("books" "libraries" "books as treasure" etc.)

  2. You might be referring to this post, which pre-dates my sage mechanic:

But I've added an updated table to the post above.

  3. I am positively drowning at my job, but after tomorrow I will finally be able to breathe easy for a couple days. Breathing easy includes savoring the Lantern. I am very excited to crack open issue #3 and return to the year 1635!

  4. Another excellent edition, and well worth the 7 coppers.

Remarks and Reports does a nice job of placing tid-bits that can be expounded upon in future editions, as well as recapping older stories without being overly detailed.

The section by Pastor John Prisken is well written, and exemplifies both the pedantry and piety of a powerful pastor.

Events at Large introduces an interesting magic item, a conundrum, and a story that begs to be read in a Welsh accent.

Dark Plunder is a superb exploration and a 10/10 example of how terrifying even a low-level encounter should be.

Two brief words on add placement. Stookehouse Meats, featuring meats being smoked in an enclosure, placed just after a comment of about how some poor fools had unwittingly breached some ancient portal. J. Harrold Well Digging Services, placed in the body of text about a pit. Cherries at the Queen's Arms Inn, red and glistening, in a bowl overflowing with sweet syrup, placed just after the line "its cruel barbs clutching at my flesh as living hooks." Those two brief words are "fucking brilliant."

    1. Thank you. You're the first person so far to note that the ad placement in these magazines is not random.
