The full text is here. I've always thought of the dryad as something of a "gotcha" character, designed to screw with the party as a sort of random adventure. At the same time, the dryad isn't powerful enough to give a stand-up fight, and isn't awash in treasure either.
I think this translates her into a sort of ongoing resource through which the player can access knowledge about the world, provided the character has lived a positive, gracious life. I'm rather pleased with the alternative proposed here.
