Having demonstrated that it works, especially as I'm in a light conversation on the side as I write this, I'm ready to post here that patreon has incorporated a chat option into their system. Oh, I know that chatting online is sooooooo 2005, but as a creator on patreon it seemed appropriate to engage with it.
The chat is available to anyone donating $3 or more ... thus, an exclusive group. Based not upon me, I should hope, but upon our having a mutual appreciation for D&D being played in a particular way, for which I'm a voice. From my perspective, whether or not it lends the possibility of "deep" conversations taking place there, communication is not in itself a bad thing.
I launched the "room" last night and woke up pleasantly this morning to find that a few people had engaged with one another while I slept. So, in fact, I don't have to be there. I think that's a fine element for something like this.
Obviously, the biggest problems with chat come from their tendency towards cyberbullying, the use of oppressive moderation, a tendency to misinformation, childishness, etcetera. I don't think any of those things are going to be an issue, since one has to join to play. 'Course, someone could decide to buy in and stir things up, but I'm not so fond of money that I'd whore myself or my associates for three dollars. Still, I know that's going to keep some from partaking in the chat room and trust me, I understand.
I met my partner Tamara on a chat room back in 2001, with our first major conversation taking place on July 19th (I have no idea why I have a head for dates like this). That led to us meeting, spending a lot of money on phone cards and later getting together permanently. So we could say I have a soft spot for chatrooms.
Anyway, it's there. To keep it from becoming an ungawdly time sink, I'll have to excuse myself from it from time to time, and on some days completely — especially in June and every three months thereafter, which are my busy times at work.
