Mostly, the characters I poached were from other tables operating next to me. In High School, then in University, games were often played in rooms where five or six other tables were also playing D&D. That still goes on at game stores like the Sentry Box near me -- though the crowd at the Sentry Box, I learned last November, are definitely no longer my people.
Anyway, they'd be playing at a table no more than 10 feet away, and could overhear what was going on at my table. That's how I poached them.
