I love the hydra, but it has been one of those monsters that seems like it's tough and scary, when in fact it has all the danger offered by a bunch of orcs. And so, all the venom (which was a part of the original myth) and the immortal head (also sourced mythologically). I've adjusted the experience so that if players do nothing more than nick and lightly damage the hydra's heads, they're effectively unhindered. It isn't mentioned in the post above, but this also means the heads cannot be, in my system, "stunned" -- unless the body is. Yum.
Hm. I see I've misspelled Lernaean on the table. I'll have to fix that.
1. Some blurb about how long it takes the Lernaean to grow a new body on big-head separation would be good: otherwise it sounds like two rounds, which is truly terrifying beyond measure.

Do you mean to read the total AP of the creature as 3+1 per head, or does the body have 3 AP of movement and the Heads have 1 each to strike with? I've never been 100% certain how multiple attacks work under your system, so the second reading SEEMED incorrect, but I don't know.

ReplyDeleteThe time needed to regrow the body from the head would be unknown (always remember that players can read the manual), but it would surely be at least 3-18 months.
Norway is too cold for hydra.
The body has 3 AP to move about; each head has 1 AP to strike with. Because the number of heads differ, and because I don't want the hydra to have the choice to scuttle off with 12 AP, it seemed best with this specific monster to express it this way. It will probably be a format that is applied to certain other monsters, such as the carrion crawler.
Well, here is a monster I dearly not want to fight while it's submerged. Definitely a monster worthy of a large group of adventurers and hirelings - but not without a good reason.
