As a reader pointed out to me yesterday, it's true. I haven't posted lately.
I've had the time. I haven't had the subject material. I have been steadily moving the wiki (171 posts so far) this past week and that is turning out to be an all day process. Or, at least, when I stop, I don't want to do anything.
I'm stunned by how much material the wiki contains. It is amazing how much I've included there since starting the wiki in 2013. I had hoped it would be more popular ... but it has been wonderful as a tool for running games, for keeping my thoughts, for expanding ideas and so on. Talking about moving it, however, doesn't make for a good blog post.
I haven't had time for working up some new project I can discuss, because I am working on the wiki. I had plans for the time off I was going to have, since my place of work in being renovated and I'm laid off ... but those plans were set aside when wikispaces made its announcement. Without being able to work on new material, though I have lots of time, I have nothing to write about.
I haven't any new insights about character building or settings to offer. I wrote a post about assessment of value in campaigns, but I soon found I hated the post so I deleted it.
This is me, dry as a bone.
I'm working on a post for the master-class blog, which I will post part of in a few hours on this blog. Patreon supporters can read it now. I talk about an experience I had where I was not such a great DM. It's been a hard essay to write, but a worthy one.
I'm still recording podcasts. I have my sixth one today. Nothing is cut and ready to go yet. I feel at the moment that I will probably launch in late March, perhaps in early April. I haven't decided.
When I can think of something more worthy of writing that this post, which is just a downer, I promise I will go with it.
Speaking of the wiki-blog, I had to do a similar operation at work so I know full well how tedious it is.
ReplyDeleteAt least, I do consider the new version very good looking and you are doing a great job with the links. It is extremely easy to consult and I found things more easily than on the wiki.
Thank you. The blog offers its own benefits. The cloud index is really nice, for example. When I have more pages together, I will put together some index pages, like in wikipedia, which I'll hook up to a links list on the sidebar.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, the blog does not allow for one to search for a page inside the process of making a link, so I have to keep two windows open when linking pages together (one to grab the url and one to paste it). Also, there's no backlinks feature on the blog (that I know of), nor any feature to find "orphans" (posts unlinked to any posts) or "wanted" (links that don't link to an existing url). But I can get along without those features.
I find your process inspiring, in a way. I'm looking at making my own version ~ not to steal from any other version of the game, but just to have my rules collected in an easily referenced, searchable and indexed format.
ReplyDeleteTo that end, I have a question: if I'm using your rules in my game, do you have any concerns with me including them in my wiki/blog? Basically, I don't want to plagiarize ~ where your rules are exactly as I use them, I would link from my blog to yours ~ but where there are differences...
The content on the wiki is deliberately free; I'd rather you didn't deliberately lift paragraphs out of my content and post them on your blog, but I have no problem whatsoever with you rewriting content I've posted for your campaign, or linking to my wiki.
ReplyDeleteMostly, the wiki serves as a sort of identifier for my thinking, beliefs and worthiness of being respected as a DM and table-top game designer. So I really just want to be acknowledged as the source for any content. This way, my work still reflects well on me, and if I ever want to expand something into a larger, price-tagged work, I can.
I'll just say; I like and use the wiki, and would use it a lot more if I were running a game with your system. My only major complaint is that you haven't finished writing the knowledge abilities yet. Please keep working on making it a good resource!
ReplyDeleteI'll keep trying, Archon, but as you know it isn't a greatly funded project.
