As the reader can see, I am just now passing the Martian Chronicles and moving up on the Color Purple ~ an awful, awful book.
Now here is a shorter list describing how long some books took to write:
David Copperfield is obviously a lot longer than my book, but the Jungle Book is shorter. My book isn't any where near as fairy/folk tale as the Hobbit, so I'm not competing with it; at any rate, I'm going to miss that mark too. I began seriously writing the present book in the late summer of 2015. C'est la vie.
C'est la vie, c'est sûr. But where did you get those lists ? If I recall correctly, what drove Victor Hugo to write Les Misérables was the imprisonment of his mistress for adultery (1845) and the book was finished and published (at least the first two parts) in 1862, so it's 17 years and not 12. Anyway, it's worth noting that during that period, he published three of the most celebrated (and massive !) collections of poems in French literature : les Châtiments, les Contemplations and la Légende des Siècles (part one).
