It is clear that you do not read this blog,...Troy,

It is clear that you do not read this blog, and that you did not read the post. I make no argument about marijuana whatsoever. Whatever argument you think is there is entirely in your head.

Take the line in the post, "systematically underscoring every discussion or 'clarification'" ... this is you, telling me that the point of the game is to role-play.

The point of the game is NOT role-play, though there are reasons why a substantial portion of the community thinks that it is. I suggest reading my posts, The Two Philosophies, Getting Started and Bogost Deconstructed. I suggest you actually read them, as two of the post are about experts in game design. You're probably not an expert in game design, so you have much to learn.

Therefore, except in your opinion, which in fact counts for nothing, there is no "logic" whatsoever about your assertion. (Read a definition of logic, please, before continuing to throw that word around).

Finally, as the blog post above clearly states, even IF the game were about role-playing, giving XP as a dopamine encouragement is a crummy form of reward, as it quickly fades and afterwards ceases to have any meaning. So you're still dead wrong.

Alexis Smolenskhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10539170107563075967noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3871409676946408069.post-38662947913552886102018-01-08T11:57:05.356-07:002018-01-08T11:57:05.356-07:00Well, this was more a primer in biology than anyth...Well, this was more a primer in biology than anything else.

Did get the point across, though.Drainhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09724863160300686402noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3871409676946408069.post-40741913902959111132018-01-08T09:38:01.540-07:002018-01-08T09:38:01.540-07:00I get the dopamine argument. Giving XP for role-playing in a role-playing game seems completely logical. The point of the game is to role-play, so gamers should be rewarded when they do well in the game. That does not mean risk/reward should be disregarded.

Also, if gamers are just given XP for combat, which causes them to "level up". They are also getting non-combative abilities for combats, which would be like receiving combative abilities for non-combats.tkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05953101597975077865noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3871409676946408069.post-85091818709617781252018-01-07T18:10:23.730-07:002018-01-07T18:10:23.730-07:00So, after breaking the game, the solution was not ...So, after breaking the game, the solution was not to fix the break, but to insert a wholly arbitrary subjective reward-system that effectively gives the players more combative abilities for combats they're not going to participate in.

Yes, that's a brilliant solution.Alexis Smolenskhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10539170107563075967noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3871409676946408069.post-54737190985428446672018-01-07T18:01:49.736-07:002018-01-07T18:01:49.736-07:00This may very well have to do with the lower risk ...This may very well have to do with the lower risk of being in combat, that newer games present. If there is little risk in battle, players have little incentive to try to avoid the enemy patrols or talk their way past enemies, because doing so costs them the XP they would earn from combat, and not doing so (IE fighting everything) isn't enough of a risk that missing out on that XP is worth it.

The campaign I run uses Pathfinder, and I've heard the players come to that conclusion more than once, before I dropped monster XP for a different leveling system. The Rubberduckhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12585052552943070379noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3871409676946408069.post-44324608575365491752018-01-07T16:57:21.336-07:002018-01-07T16:57:21.336-07:00I particularly like it when Monty says, "They...I particularly like it when Monty says, "They feel like they're getting something, but it is really just bullshit: but what the fuck, they're psychologically retarded, so they'll eat this crap up with a spoon!"

Or words to that effect.Alexis Smolenskhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10539170107563075967noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3871409676946408069.post-36230019992644720732018-01-07T16:54:55.539-07:002018-01-07T16:54:55.539-07:00They are all like this.
