Let's Start: Rolling Character Stats

Issues surrounding the location of the Elsewhere party will be dealt
with in another post.

Here are the two groups.  Have I missed anyone?  That's entirely possible!  Please point out your comment and I will update the above.

As far as I know, Oddbit will be running either Lukas or his hench Kismet, or both.  James C. will be running either Andrej or his hench Sophia, or both.  Nine-toes will be running his character Nine-toes from back in the day.

Butch I'm not sure of ~ will it be Enrico or someone completely new?

Apart from Nine-toes, who has been clear and only has Nine-toes to run, could Oddbit, James C and Butch be perfectly clear about which character will be run and in which capacity, of it a new character is to rolled from scratch.

The rest of you all need to roll new characters.  Here's what we will do.

I need you to roll 4d6 a total of six times, keeping the sum of the highest three dice in each roll.  I will then need you to assign these six rolls to strength, intelligence, wisdom, constitution, dexterity and charisma.  Then please post these rolls in a comment below.  With the assigned rolls, specify your race and your gender.  Races are limited to dwarf, elf, gnome, half-elf, halfling, half-orc and human.  Not all races can be all classes:

race-class limitations table

  • DO NOT give your character a name or any other details other than the stats, the character's race, gender or the character's class.
  • DO NOT argue about the race-class table above.  These are final and I don't want to debate about it, particularly at this time.
  • DO NOT forget about the ability stat limitations for the individual classes.  You will find a table for these listed below.
  • DO NOT ask questions about the campaign or beyond the specific rules regarding character creation, or what you will be able to do at some point in creating your character, except where it directly applies to your character's stats, your character's race and your character's gender.  We'll get to everything eventually.
  • DO NOT make any adjustments to your character's stats due to your race or your age.  Wait for me to tell you what adjustments to make.  I want to see the natural numbers you rolled, not adjusted numbers!

Character Class Minimums

Do remember that my character generator makes nothing a dump stat.

I would strongly suggest that players do not try to run a multi-classed character . . . but IF you have the minimums for all the classes you want to mix (and there are no limitations as to what classes can be mixed), then you may ask questions about it.

All classes have higher minimums for multi-classed characters for the primary stat.  The primary stat will be the one that requires the highest minimum for the class.  For the assassin it is strength, for the monk it is wisdom, for the ranger it is constitution.  For a multi-classed character, this stat must be 15 or better (the wiki under cleric and mage disagree with this ~ I need to fix the wiki on these points).  Where the minimum primary stat is already 15 or higher, there is no change.

All multi-classed characters get all the abilities of all the classes they happen to be, with one exception.  Whatever the mix, a multi-classed character gets the best possible selection of weapons and the worst possible selection of armor.

I think that's the lot.  Let's give it a try.

  1. All right. After much fretting, rolling and reading the sage skill descriptions, I've made a decision. As per the wiki, I rerolled my stats several times until I hit the recommended minimums (two 15+ or one 17+) which didn't also have exceptionally low "dump stats." I've written all the rolls down elsewhere so if that isn't how you want to run this campaign then I can make changes as need be.

  2. Tim. Did I say to do anything according to the wiki?

Please dump those rolls and do as I asked. Six rolls. Not a bunch of rolls until you reach some minimum.

  3. I tried to post in the other thread but apparently it didn't make it. After thinking it over, I will stick with Ahmet for now. I'm excited to get the band back together.

  5. Tim,

Change one of the 10s for a 16 and the other 10 for a 12 ~ feel free to switch around your scores and choose a different class.

I have a method for determining minimums that I'm going to be using for this mass production character making session. I just can't take the headache of trying to do it online with this many people as I would at a game table ~ and because I can't watch the people roll, I can't check up on anyone's honesty anyway.

  6. Seems sensible. Here's the third draft in that case.

  8. Butch (Ahmet): I've created a post EXCLUSIVELY for you on the renamed campaign blog, Campaign Senex. You'll find it here.

We can start dealing with your sage abilities there.

  9. Nice rolls, Jonathon. Those can stand as is.

  12. Arduin, adjust the 11 to a 16; feel free to reorder your abilities and choose a different class if desired. Let me know the reordering ~ and get some sleep. This can wait until the morning.

  13. Woah, Dani, those are bad!

What I'm doing is rolling for everyone as well: then adjusting everyone's rolls by comparing them with mine and raising them when applicable.

For you, I get a 17 in exchange for one of your 12s and a 15 in exchange for an 11. Please adjust your numbers and change your class if you wish.

Case in point. At this early stage, anyone can change their race or class. Tim and Jonathon, I'm working on your character backgrounds right now.

  14. I'll swap the newly adjusted Constitution with Wisdom.

The full character, hopefully correct this time, is now

    Strength: 14
    Intelligence: 13
    Wisdom: 16
    Constitution: 14
    Dexterity: 13

  15. This should be the link to Tim's Character's background. Can someone please confirm for me that the link opens to a Google Drive file named Campaign Senex?

    https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B1X_mF2lcvJ_VE1CbEktdzlmQmM

    It should be public.

Tim, have a look at your background and pick a name for your character. One thing added that isn't on the background: you were born in the Donbass, in the town of Kamut. Forgot to include that for you.

  16. Thank you, Alexis. I was impressed with myself.

  19. Good, Maxwell. Those stats will stand. I'm working on other character backgrounds, but I'll come around to yours.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Shelby,

Those stats will stand also. Don't understand why the charisma is so high for a ranger, but it ain't my character. I'll have your background up as soon as I'm able.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Jonathan, you can find your background in the Campaign Senex folder:

    https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B1X_mF2lcvJ_VE1CbEktdzlmQmM

Pick a name for your character. You were born in Marash, Cappadocia, just north of modern Syria.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Okay, I had a little problem with Arduin, Maxwell and Dani's backgrounds; goofed them, had to update google drive a couple of times. but the right versions of each should be up now.

Each of you can pick a character name.

I'm just going to work on Shelby's character background and then quit for the night.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Okay, Shelby's characters' background is up as well. Go ahead and name your character, Shelby.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Ah, yes, chandler-assassin, a lesser-known variant of the thief-acrobat. I'm excited to play already!

Should my background say that my place of birth is "unknown," or is that a leftover error?

    ReplyDelete
  25. I can't determine your birthplace until I know where the elsewhere party begins.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Oh, of course -- the two who already have birthplaces are in the Donbass campaign.

    ReplyDelete
  27. On lacking a party reference point, I've let the dice fall where they will, 4d6 in order.

  28. Looks great! I'm impressed that I outweigh my real self. Perhaps I will tell people my mother was cursed to bear dwarvish children! ;)
I will go by Yuliya Romanyuk, a good Catholic Christian name for a sweet Catholic card shark.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Character name will be Rowan.

I notice I received a profession from my mother's side as well, but only see the benefits from Tutor. That is, unless I misunderstand, and the benefits of Tutor is Read/Write, and the benefits of my mother's profession are the bonus skill points.

Sidenote: I am so hyped right now.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I will play both Andrej and Sophia.

Sophia and the other henchmen are still in Kofunisia. I know we talked about reuniting the party before halting. I'm assuming we still intend to and think it the best course, especially since you'll be running 2 campaigns now.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Lothar Svensson. A good Northern European name, I think. Shall we set up blogger profiles for posting in character/character sheets, as was previously done?

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm sure I'm too late, but is there still space?

    ReplyDelete
  33. James,

I'm sorry, it is too late for you to join.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I figured. Ah well, maybe when a spot opens up

    ReplyDelete
  35. James/Andrej [two different James makes this complicated],

Oops, I did forget about leaving them behind. I haven't looked ~ I'll bet they were in mid-adventure of some kind. I'll have a look first chance I get.

    Arduin,

The mother's profession comment is an unfixed glitch of a new generator version (not done). I've updated google drive with your father's profession added.

If anyone else sees that they should have two professions, shout.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Character names: Shelby/Lothar, Jonathon/Ibrahim, Arduin/Rowan, Tim/Yuliya . . . and others not named yet.

Feel free to make a blogger account in your character's names, that will be necessary. There's still lots to do. I'm going to make an individual page on the campaign blogs for each person as I get the opportunity. Please wait to hear from me.

Woke up to 12 comments this morning ~ feeling a little overwhelmed. For now, please keep chatter to a minimum, as I get this mess organized.

    ReplyDelete
  37. James/Andrej,

That does make it complicated. Three years ago I left Enrico, Sophia and Kismet after killing the Psammodons.

Option A: The Koufonisia party leaves their lands there in the hands of Carlito and Tazio, Ahmet's men-at-arms, and comes and joins the main party (hand wave it, just say they're in the Donbass).

Option B: We start with the Koufonisia henchmen and the new people, in Greece.

Option C: We leave the Koufonisia henchmen and the new players start with Lukas, Ahmet and Andrej.

Could just Lukas, Ahmet and Andrej weigh in on this?

Ahmet/Butch ~ I haven't seen you comment on the Campaign Senex blog, on this post:

  38. Drain,

Those numbers can stand. I've added your background to the Campaign Senex folder:

    https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B1X_mF2lcvJ_VE1CbEktdzlmQmM

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'd like to wait to name my character until I know his birthplace, please. Of course that means waiting for the vote to be settled and for you to roll birthplace - I'll check back soon.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Maxwell,

Your character was born in a town called Kirkfall, in the Shire of the South Fjords, in the halfling Mayoralty of Breen, about 140 miles north of Stavanger.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I have moved all the character files for the Juvenis campaign (see most recent post) to this folder:

    https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B1X_mF2lcvJ_bkQ0OVdxdlM5TUk

    ReplyDelete
  42. Mmm, a human raised among halflings? Interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  43. More likely you were born there when your father the Chandler was making a delivery or picking up fuel.

Since you are able to lodge anywhere in the area, that being Rogaland, assume that your father was well-known (and you as well, winning that competition) ~ but we'll go into this later when we create a page for your character's creation.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Regarding the Koufonisia question -- I think Option B works, but I don't feel so strongly about it that I would argue if the others want to do A or C. (My only concern being that Option C doesn't mean we are giving up our henchmen permanently.)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Regarding preferences to starting character.
If I have to vote for one a reunion hand wave seems easiest.
However, I would be equally interested in Lukas or Kismet.

Lukas has a lot to gain in a little bit of XP, Kismet is just a fun chopper if I remember correctly.

Given I was not level 5 Kismet is basically a new character so I could play with the big boys, but I dunno if Alexis would be ok with Lukas adopting him should he make level 5. (technically I should have picked someone taller as a hench for hiding behind, but we make choices) If I cannot adopt I feel a greater inclination to Lukas.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I am going to read Butch & Lukus' answers as having the party start in Koufonisia.

Incidentally, I have had that arrangement before (kismet added to lukas before the character reaches 5th) because it keeps coming up when parties have a reason to split up. As long as Kismet and Lukas do not run at the same time until Lukas reaches 5th, I'm fine with the arrangement.

Okay, so everyone in the Senex Party. That will definitely be a start in Koufonisia, Greece. Matter settled.

We're well into the character making process now; once I hear from both regarding proficiencies, I'll generate a pricing table and they can start buying things. Then I'll pick up the campaign.
