Charging and Horse Rules

I just have to have some feedback for these recent combat, charging & horse movement rules.  I have no idea if I'm waxing in the right direction or banging my head against a wall.

Please answer the poll on the sidebar.

Just a note that I am still working on the horse pages.  I am adding links and filling out details: such as updates to the Handling II skill and additional Horse Gaits.

  1. More. For the love of all that is holy, we need more.

Seriously, this is the first time I've seen someone acknowledge that you can do more with horses than just charge. I can see this literally changing how games progress. Especially after the first time the PCs face down a band of skilled, mounted archers.

    TPK anyone?

  2. I think the charging rules seem fiddly on paper but can't put my finger on why. I trust you when you say they ought to work at the table.

Horses seem damn good! Finally we are not subject to the eternal regime of "every fantasy person ever can ride a horse, let's leave it at that so we can just pretend they are cars." Keep it up.

  3. The charging rules ARE fiddly because they must account for variables and outliers. In most cases, however, when the same move is done over and over, the rules will shake out as pretty simple.

  4. What happens if the defender wants to block a charging character from passing through?

The +2 damage bonus on slashing charge (but not overbearing) seems a bit too situational. Why not fold it into the charge attack, representing the added momentum imparted by charging?

  5. Homer,

The rules in the wiki on initiative describes who attacks first. It is difficult to set yourself up so that you can be in the right place moving at the right speed to have the right amount of movement to make the slashing attack possible - so those limitations are inherent in limiting the power of the slashing charge, who can employ it and when.

Look at the wiki under Movement in Combat:
