The Halfling Colony of Archangel

How does this format look for individual provincial maps?

Created this page on the wiki for Archangel today.  A good full-size view can be seen by clicking on the image on the wiki page.

Just for giggles, decided to apply the same method to the Pirate Khanate of Astrakhan.  What I like about the geography, history and people that are referenced throughout the two pages is that they can be looked up on Wikipedia.  I declined to put in links, however, as I have changing or adjusting actual history to fit the particulars of my world.

  1. I think it looks good. If the players plan on being there a while I would personally add more detail if there are some, but knowing how much detail your maps already have I doubt there is much you could add.

  2. Functional and aesthetically pleasing.

  3. Instead of gray can you do a faded coloration for the other tiles?
    Or does that not work?

Might be interesting to see the terrain at the borders a bit easier.

  4. I'll give that color a try, Oddbit.

  5. Pity. That seems to make it just look confusing.

  6. Alexis, I have a question specific to the linked Astrakhan page, whose format and presentation I find both visually appealing and concise. With all of that arable land in Astrakhan, why not more population beyond the city? Is the city's population technically all urban inhabitants or does this count farming villages within a certain radius of the city?

  7. James,

I'm not really sure why. I could find little use of the land and virtually no notable population centers at all going back that far. I would guess that the city of Astrakhan was defensible - there were so many enemies. Farms in Kalmykstan would have been vulnerable to attack from the Cossacks and, in my world, from orc raiders from Digoria; nomadic grazing seems to have therefore been the order of the day.
